jus sanguinis, 2013
drawings on paper (42x30 cm)

Jus sanguinis (the right of blood) and jus soli (the right of soil) refer to the main criteria for determination of national status of individuals. According to the principle of jus soli, the nationality of an individual is determined by the fact of his birth in the territory of a state. The principle of jus sanguinis on the other hand is based on the fact of descent. Jus sanguinis drawings represents the self-portraits of the artists as early humans. The idea goes beyond the ties of origin, nationality, ethnicity, language, leading to a more complex and multi-layered form of belonging.  The work incorporates multiple aspects, one of which is the actual socio-political debate around emigrants as intruders and the anxiety of social cohesion.
